Taking its inspiration from tough, gruelling races like Paris-Roubaix, where speed must be tempered with comfort and control, the Caledonia Ultegra Disc Road Bike from Cervélo offers real-world performance aplenty.

The carbon frame is efficient, stiff and aerodynamic, like many road bikes, but it also offers a more relaxed geometry and greater compliance for less fatigue on big days out where the roads tackled vary widely in quality. Clearance for 34mm tyres, disc brakes and hidden mudguard mounts further increase its long-distance credentials and there are even mounts for a Bento box on the top tube so an energising snack is never far away.

Long regarded as the stalwart of Shimano’s groupset range, 11-speed Ultegra has virtually all of the performance of the premium Dura-Ace components but at a far more palatable price thanks to the use of less exotic materials. An 11-34t cassette and 52/36 chainrings give plenty of ratios for the steepest, toughest routes and the hydraulic disc brakes provide great control and modulation come rain or shine.

30mm Vittoria Zaffiro Pro V tyres ensure good grip whilst the larger width gives more air volume for comfort and shock absorption when the road deteriorates. Tubeless-ready DT Swiss E1850 23 Spline wheels and quality Cervélo finishing kit complete the compelling spec list.
